Unfortunately Microsoft, like most other products, is not perfect. People take advantage of multiple security "holes" that are found in MS Windows and Office Products and write malicious programs that use those shortcomings to perform destructive functions. To combat that, Microsoft issues fixes to those holes as they get discovered. Often those fixes are called patches as well.
